FERTILITY GLASS RITUAL
If you walk the beach during the summer months, collect any smooth bits of glass you find among the rocks. In ancient times, this sea-glass was known as “mermaids’ mirror bits,” and was considered good luck for the beachcomber. Often mermaids were depicted holding a mirror and a comb, symbols of Venus, the goddess of beauty and fertility. Venus was said to have sprung fully grown from the sea. Her Greek name, Aphrodite, literally means “foam-risen.” Place the sea-glass you find in a little green bag with a piece of red silk cut in the shape of a heart. As you sew the bag closed, say:
This bag I sew, fertility,
A child will come from me.
Fecund Venus, I pray,
Abundant life come my way.
This spell will work equally well if you seek fertility of another sort. Just change the word “child” above to “creativity,” or “abundant garden,” or whatever it is you seek.

A Baby Blessing Spell
Carmentis,a Roman goddess of childbirth, had the ability to fortell how
long an infant would live. To bless a newborn as she begins life’s journey,
gather one rattle, a piece of blue paper, a pen with silver ink, a small box,
and silver glitter. As the baby sleeps, gently shake the rattle three times;
place it in the box. On the blue paper draw with the silver ink an image of a
boat; place it in the box. Sprinkle some glitter over the box’s contents as you say:
Little one, your journey has begun.
But the best is still to come.
Live long and live well.
Let no one break this spell.
Keep the box hidden.

Irish Evil Eye Charm
In many cultures, including the Gaelic, it is considered bad luck to compliment a baby or to remark about a child’s beauty as bad fairies might take notice. Flattery and envy attracts the evil eye, so wise mothers and crones will speak in reverse, ironically commenting: “How ugly that child is!” Or: “I’m sorry, Mrs. Duffy. Your baby is hideous!” If a stranger has the bad manners to offer a compliment, or a fixed adoring gaze on a babe, the mother can deflect it by asking the person to spit on the child. Returning home, mothers can also perform a simple charm to protect her family by spitting on the children upon entering the house. If she forgets, the grandmother can do it.

A Spell to Protect Sleeping Children
Saint Marina is a little-known saint honored today only in certain areas of the eastern Mediterranean. She is said to be the protector of sleeping children. Some say she never existed, but her spirit is still prayed to. To weave a web of protection around your children, obtain three charms—one shaped like an anchor, one shaped like a heart, and one simple blue turquoise bead. As your children sleep, empower the charms by saying:
With this anchor you’ll be safe and secure.
With this heart, our bond will endure.
With this stone, blue as the sky,
May you never be harmed by the evil eye.
The anchor, heart, and turquoise are symbols of protection in the Near East. You should hide the charms. When your children are old enough, give them the charms as a gift with a gold chain. They don’t have to know you have enchanted these charms, so be sure not to tell them.

Happiness for Children Spell
The Roman festival celebrating the lives of children is known as Juvenalia, and it falls on December 25. This year consider using your holiday tree as a talisman for the happiness of a child in your life. Along with your usual decorations, allow the child to help select whimsical items such as pinwheels, action figures, or other items to include on your tree. On colored ribbons write out wishes for the child’s future—such as happiness, prosperity, good education, good friends, and so on. As the child attaches each ribbon to the tree have him or her recite:
Blessings of this season come to me,
Let me be all that I can be.

Beautiful Bouncing Wishes Spell
A friend once said that you should never pass a row of gumball machines without stopping. There is a small thrill in not knowing what exactly will come tumbling out. Will it be a nifty new treasure or a true piece of junk for which you have just wasted your money? Four small rubber bouncy balls—as can be found in a gumball machine—are required for this spell. The spell must be cast where children play: a school playground, the park, your own front yard. It is best done when there are very few children around to observe. Holding one of the balls, face east and infuse the ball with a good wish appropriate for the direction—perhaps that the finder do well on an upcoming test or that he or she find the necessary inspiration of a school project. Having charged it with your wish, toss the ball eastward, sending your wishes with it. Do the same with the remaining three balls, making directionally appropriate wishes.
