~ Witches` Sabbats by Mike Nichols ~
Our Price: $14.00 BUY NOW
The Ultimate Guide to Pagan Holidays "While the true believers and their critics may rage at one another about just how old Witchcraft or Wicca really is, one thing cannot be disputed: our holidays are the oldest in the world." --Mike Nichols, The Witches` Sabbats From the award-winning author of The Witches` Sabbats Web site, Mike Nichols discusses the historical and mythological customs, lore, and traditions associated with the eight Pagan holidays. Beautifully illustrated by Heather Lloyd, The Witches` Sabbats includes: A new preface, "Counting the Days"; A new, never-before published essay, "Marking the Sabbats"; A new bibliography and index; Two recent articles; Plus four additional thought-provoking essays! Most books on the wheel of the year tell you what to do on a particular holiday; Nichols` explains the origins and symbolism of the Sabbats--or why Pagans celebrate the Old Holidays. The author presents a wonderful potpourri of holiday lore from around the world & throughout history, along with fun crafts, delicious recipes -- even a calendar of celebrations for every day in December. That leaving cookies for Santa mirrors the old tradition of leaving a loaf of bread on the table overnight to bring prosperity in the new year? That the Yule log can be traced back to the ancient Greeks? Need a recipe for wassail or plumb pudding? Tips for your holiday party? Want to make the season special by making your own decorative crafts & gifts? That’s just a sampling of what's inside. Wheel of the Year
The Wheel of the Year marks the Sun's journey across the sky, the
solstices, equinoxes and the Earth's changing
seasons. Each spoke of the wheel marks an
important moment of progression and change in
the Earth. We celebrate the holiday starting the
day before until the day after the Sabbat date.
Our religious calendar contains 13 Full Moon
celebrations and 8 Sabbats or days of power. The
Sabbats are solar rituals, marking the points of
the Sun’s yearly cycle, and are but half of the
ritual year. The Esbats are the Full Moon
celebrations. There are 12-13 Full Moons yearly,
or one every 28 1/4 days. The Moon is a symbol
of the Goddess as well as a source of energy.
Thus, after the religious aspects of the Esbats,
we often practice magick, tapping into the
larger amounts of energy which are thought to
exist at these times. Most rites are held at
night. The eight Sabbats represent seasonal
birth, death, and rebirth.
