The “Anima Mundi” has been defined in philosophy as the universal soul. Plato believed that the Anima Mundi acted to the world, as the human soul acts to the human body. He spoke of the cosmos as a living being, with a body, soul, and spirit. The “Anima Mundi” was thus called, The Soul of the World. Some say the profoundness of the soul was minimized by the philosophy of Rene Descartes, in the 17th century. He removed the soul from nature, by stating that all of nature was a machine, including the human body. Science attempted to understand how the body worked, but not why. Western thinking perpetuated this idea by separating science from religion, and allowed science to define the world by it’s own terms. We neglected our souls, and were not conscious of the souls in others; the souls which make living things alive.
On September 11, 2001, the world as we knew it, changed forever. The Soul of the World shuddered. The event left us shaken, bewildered, frightened, enraged, confused, and yet still hopeful. Many of us began to appreciate our lives more than ever before, because the uncertainty and fragility of life made it all the more precious. Our souls were awakened. We must understand that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves; that we are not only part of a living, breathing earth, but part of a universal consciousness. “Bastet”, or “Bast”, was a most popular goddess of ancient Egypt. She was a cat-headed deity. The domestic cat was revered in Ancient Egypt because of it’s mysterious nature and affinity for it’s human owners. One of the largest, most joyous and elaborate festivals was held in honor of Bastet in the city of Bubastis. It is estimated that 700,000 people attended this festival every year. Egyptologists uncovered catacombs of mummified felines in the ruins of the Temple of Bubastis. It was believed the mummies could bring messages to the gods from their owners. Bastet was called “The Divine Mother”. Her Greek counterpart was the Goddess Artemis, and Roman Goddess Diana. During the Middle Ages, the name Diana, came to mean “Queen of the Witches” and the cat became identified with witchcraft and goddess worship.
Our “Bastet” is represented with an Egyptian headdress and skirt adorned with Lotus Blossoms. The lotus is a symbol of The Great Goddess. On her arms she wears the serpents; the oldest symbol of female power. The spiral at her naval symbolizes the mysteries of death and rebirth. Demeter is part of the Greek Pantheon of Gods and Goddesses of Mt Olympus.
She is known as the Mother Goddess and also the Goddess of Grain. She is most well-known by the myth of Demeter and her daughter Persephone. Persephone was the child of Demeter and Zeus.
As a maiden, Persephone was abducted by the God Hades, and taken to the underworld to become his bride. Demeter heard her daughter's cries as she was swallowed up by the earth and brought into the darkness of Hades' world. Demeter searched for nine days and nights, without sleep or food in search of Persephone. Heliope, God of the Sun, then told her that Zeus had allowed Hades to abduct her and make her his bride. Demeter's grief was so great that she could only wander the earth in despair.
At her Temple in Eleusis she sat, in hopeless depression at the loss of her child. She stopped functioning as the nurturing, mothering Goddess, causing crops to fail and no children to be born. Famine threatened the destruction of humanity. Zeus had to do something! He allowed Persephone to be brought to Demeter to finally end her grief and restore the earth's abundance. But poor Persephone had eaten pomegranate seeds given to her by Hades and could only spend two-thirds of the year with Demeter. She had to return to Hades for the other third. This is said to be our cold, dark, winter months when crops stop growing and the landscape becomes barren.
The myth of Demeter and Persephone is testament to the bond of a mother and child. A mother's love is boundless. It lies deep in the psyche where spirituality resides. The Goddess Demeter represents a woman's need to nurture and sustain; whether it be her children, her work, her community, or other people's children. She will provide for physical needs, emotional needs, and spiritual needs. Demeter also represents the challenge of growth through suffering, which results in renewed wisdom and a deeper spiritual understanding. Original design by Linda Masselli

To the pre-Celtic people of Ireland, the Tuatha de Danann, all forms of life go through three stages. The first stage starts with the Creation of each "spark" of Life. From the moment of birth, each Soul experiences the same trials and suffering of every plant and animal. Each spark is reborn from one shell to the next, going through all life situations until it reaches a state of "ALBRED" and is ready for the second stage, the human experience. Within this stage all facets of human life are explored and understood, as the soul is reborn countless times. This cycle continues until the spark reaches "GWYNFYD" or "purity". The ancient bards defined this state as "life manifested as a pure rejoicing force having attained its triumph over "Evil." The design style of this "Danna's Triad" is called "vegetal" as it is composed of stylized vines and leaves. This design is based on one found on a bronze relic called a horn cap (the handle on a chariot or saddle) which was found in the Thames river and dates to about the fourth century B.C. Symbolically, the vegetal style reminds us to respect nature and all forms of life therein.
