About lava: The most prodigous product of some active volcanos is the streams of lava poured forth — sometimes from vents in a summit crater — sometimes from vents lower down the slope. When it issues from the mountain its heat is intense and it glows like a furnace, so that, during the night especially, these fiery rivers present a grand yet awful spectacle. The streams spread themselves till they sometimes attain a breadth of several miles, with a depth of several hundred feet, and they flow onward till their length sometimes reaches fifty miles.

CURING THE POTJIE AND OTHER CAST IRON CAULDRONS
Most potjies come already cured. The way to confirm is a cured potjie is shiny and smooth on both outside an inside. These are ready to use immediately after a good scrub.
An uncured pot is a very dark grey, rough on the inside and needs the following:
Fill 2/3 of the potjie with water; add 200ml of vinegar and boil for one hour.
Let the potjie cool, empty contents and scour the inside with very rough sandpaper until as smooth as possible.
Fill 2/3 of the potjie with water again and, this time, instead of vinegar, add any vegetable leaves (carrot, potato, old veggies - don't be shy, chuck in as much as comes to hand!).
Boil for another hour, cool, drain and again scour until the inside of pot is as smooth as possible.
Wash the pot thoroughly, dry and rub inside with cooking oil. Clean before using.
Always wash the pot thoroughly after use and rub it immediately with some cooking oil to prevent rust.
Repeat step three and four if the discarded water is still excessively black.
HISTORY OF THE POTBELLY CAULDRON
The "potjie" is the "potbelly" cauldron.
It first arrived on the African Continent with the Dutch and English settlers and has co-existed in the culture ever since.
The modern cook pot is cast in fine green sand and seasoned with high quality flax oil. The timeless value of this pot lies in its round shape,
which allows the heat to flow evenly around the sides of the pot and maintain the liquids at the lowest point to keep food from burning.
The lid as a deep lip to place coals on top and a heavy metal carrying handle for lifting & hanging.
Pure cast iron will last for generations with proper care. Manufactured with pure grey iron and no pot metal additives.
Wash with regular detergent and keep oiled with a fine vegtable oil.
Iron will season and turn darker with time and use.
