Welcome back to Saffron’s Cauldron! Saffron’s Cauldron is a monthly article that discusses spells and information that can be used in doing spell work. I’ll be keeping you posted on new and old spells, Rituals that you can use for the upcoming Sabbaths, loads of information pertaining to spell work, charms and tools that you can use in your daily life.
With Samhain upon us we face the years final Harvest. In olden days, people would scour the fields for the last bits of grain they could reap. They would store as much as they could by way of preserving so that they would have plenty of food for the long Winter ahead. During the Winter months they would work their crafts and huddle round the central fireplace all the while telling stories of the year past and many tales of years past that would become legend for their future children.
In modern time, we find we have not wandered too far from the old ways. We still prepare for the long winter and stock up on canned goods in case of an outage or emergency. Many still find themselves canning vegetables and fruits from their own Harvest… or drying out the last of the herbs they have brought in from their yards. We also find plenty of time in the winter to snuggle close to our loved ones in the warmth of our homes and fireplaces and perhaps share a story or two. While modern times have made survival much easier for us, we still find ourselves doing many of the same tasks and spending much time working our own crafts.
This is the time of year to rest from your hard work and to reflect on the work you have done this past year and the Harvest you are now realizing. Is it everything you expected? If not, take this time to reflect on all you have done. This is a time to rest and review the year and know that the spring will be here soon enough to begin anew. Perhaps we can even take a step back in time and reflect on what our ancestors went through at this time of year. With that said, I leave you with a spell to help you connect with your ancestors and let them connect with you to teach you something new to take forward into the winter months… perhaps you will even receive a seed that you can plant in the spring!
Ancestral Journey Spell
To take a journey back to your ancestral roots, on the afternoon of a Full Moon burn some sage in an abalone shell. Use a feather to push the smoke to all four corners of your room. Then sit down, close your eyes, and ask your ancestors to come to you. See them taking you back in time. Relax and remain open to any helpful information they may provide you. When you have finished your meditation write the information in a journal. Reread the journal on the next Full Moon. Usually you will have learned something new by then.
Wishing a Blessed Samhain to you all,
Saffron
