Sabbat Spells

Welcome back to Saffron’s Cauldron! Saffron’s Cauldron is a monthly article that discusses spells and information that can be used in doing spell work. I’ll be keeping you posted on new and old spells, Rituals that you can use for the upcoming Sabbaths, loads of information pertaining to spell work, charms and tools that you can use in your daily life.

In the northern hemisphere, the autumnal equinox will occur on September 22 or September 23, depending on the earth's position in a given year. This day also marks the beginning of autumn. The word equinox is derived from the Latin word aequinoctium (equal night). This year we greet the Autumn Equinox on September 23rd.

Usually celebrated on August 1st through the 2nd, British Witches often refer to the astrological date of August 6th the “Old Lammas”. This date has always been considered a “power point” of the Zodiac, and it symbolized by the Lion (one of the tetramorph figures found on the Tarot cards, “The World” and “The Wheel of Fortune”). It is one of the four fixed signs of the Zodiac, which naturally align with the four Great Sabbats of Witchcraft. The other figures are the Bull, the Eagle and the Spirit. Interestingly enough, Christians have adopted the same iconography to represent the four gospel-writers.

On the autumnal equinox, many Pagans celebrate Mabon as one of the eight sabbats (a celebration based on the cycles of the sun). Mabon celebrates the second harvest and the beginning of winter preparations. Its a day when the forces of dark and light come to balance… and then moving forward, darkness gains power and drives us toward the chill of Winter.

The Druids call this celebration, Mea'n Fo'mhair, and honor the Green Man, the God of the Forest, by offering libations to trees. Offerings of ciders, wines, herbs and fertilizer are appropriate at this time. Wiccans celebrate the aging Goddess as she passes from Mother to Crone, and her consort the God as he prepares for death and re-birth.

Some of the Spells you might work on Mabon might be for Protection, prosperity, security, and self-confidence. Also those of harmony and balance are often done on this night. Mabon is a time of mysteries. It’s a time to stop and reflect on your harvest and enjoy the fruits of your labor… be it in the fields or the home. It is also a time to honor the Deities and those of the Spirit world. It may be why so many feel a strong pull to the mystical and magical this time of year… with Halloween fast on our heals and the air starting to get cool it’s the time of year that Divination in many forms is most sought out. With this in mind, and being the “craft” season I will leave you with a little something fun to do on one of those cold rainy nights coming your way. Enjoy!

This craft project comes from “Scrying for Beginners” by Donald Tyson.

How to make a Black Scrying Mirror

Although you can use an ordinary mirror for scrying, it is easy to become distracted by the reflected image. Most seers prefer to use a black mirror that is specifically created for magic.

Black mirrors are easy to make.  You will need only a piece of glass and a frame to hold it. Any frame for a photograph can be turned into a black mirror.

Take the glass out of your picture frame, clean it well, allow it to dry, then paint one side of it with black enamel. You will probably have to use two or three coats in order to make the paint completely opaque. Oil-based enamels are more durable, but they require a long time to dry. Be sure to leave the glass until the paint is completely dry and hardened before returning it to its frame. You may have to allow it to dry two or even three days after giving it the final coat of paint.

When you insert it into its frame, put it in with the glass side facing outward. If you have taken care to remove and hairs, dust, or lint from the glass before painting it, you will have made a perfect black mirror.

The advantage of a black mirror is that it reflects less light, and therefore is less distracting to the eye. It gives the gaze nothing to fix upon. This draws the awareness of the scryer into it, as though it were a midnight well of water. Silver mirrors have the drawback that they are designed to reflect images as brightly and clearly as possible. The scryer does not seek reflections, but visions. For this purpose, the black mirror is a superior tool."

Just a last minute note for those who like to charge their divination tools by the Full Moon. As this project may take 4-5 days to complete you may want to start it early! This month the Full Moon, called the Harvest Moon, will be on the 10th.

Have a Blessed Mabon!
Blessings to you and yours!
